ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

We are a fourth generation farming family firmly planted on our Southland based Waikaka Station since 1907.  Originally established by Laurie’s great grandfather, our operation is now run by Laurie and Sharon, alongside their son Ross and his wife Steph.  Their young children, Ollie and Emmie, make up the 6th generation living on the land, and can often be found helping out around the farm on bike or horseback.

We are committed to developing our operating practice and are keeping a close eye on industry innovations, always striving to make our herd and flocks the best we possibly can whilst implementing new technologies to make our jobs easier.

We are very aware that we are caretakers of this beautiful part of the country, and in line with this, development and maintenance of the property has always been a high priority, and indeed a culmination of four generations of blood sweat and tears.

Our passion lies in Stud breeding Herefords, Romneys, Texels, Romex and Romdales.  The core focus of our breeding program is Genetics gains based, and our aim is to help our commercial clients by offering them the best possible genetics to strengthen and grow their livestock businesses and ultimately make them more profitable.  We are consistently supplying genetics that will respond positively in varying environmental challenges.

We have been calving heifers at 2 years old since 1988, and now have the added value of 2 year old calving trouble free bred into our dams.  This was achieved by using Breedplan to alter our genetics and changing our management practices.  We also lamb all our hoggets and are improving our lambing rates each year.  Our clients are seeing improved results with birthing percentages, growth rates, meat yield and meat quality through the introduction of Waikaka Genetics to their livestock enterprises.

We are passionate about traditional sheep and beef farming and focus our full attention on achieving profitable gains.  This means we are not interested in dairy grazing or any other quick fix ideas outside our core activity, and fully engage our energy into constantly improving within the sheep and beef fields.  We pride ourselves in being down to earth and approachable, and strive to foster lasting relationships and friendships with our clients.  Our door is always open to new ideas and discussions on how we can make things better for our clients and the industry as a whole.

We want you to be a part of the Waikaka success story.  Sign up to our newsletter to stay in the loop and keep informed of happenings about the farm, drop us an email, or pop into the farm anytime to have a cuppa and see what we are all about.

BREEDING BETTER MEAT

hereford prime

Hereford Prime

We are passionate supporters of Hereford Prime, with Laurie being one of the programmes early instigators and the long standing President of the association. Hereford Prime was the first quality beef breed programme launched in New Zealand in 1992. It was born out of frustrating dining experiences by beef enthusiasts who were searching for a consistent and quality eating experience every time.

Laurie Paterson

Laurie Paterson

Laurie was born and bred right here on Waikaka Station and has been farming here full time for 50 years.  He brings this lifetime of experience and knowledge to our current operation, and has also been notably influential within the Hereford industry. Laurie was one of the original instigators of Hereford Prime and is still currently president and incredibly passionate about the programme. He has just recently been honoured with a NZ Order of Merit for his contribution to the NZ Beef Industry.
Sharon Paterson

Sharon Paterson

Sharon has been an essential part of the farming operation since marrying Laurie and moving to Waikaka Station.  Along the way she's added many strings to her bow, the latest see's Sharon working off farm as secretary for the Southern Fielddays at Waimumu, helping to co-ordinate one of the countries largest growing agricultural events.  Sharon loves her dogs and is also a keen dog trialler, and founding the Texel Stud in 1995 she has worked tirelessly to make her flock the success it is today.
Ross Paterson

Ross Paterson

Bought up on Waikaka Station, Ross has long held a love for the land and stock inherited from Laurie and Sharon and his childhood spent out farming whenever the chance arose.  After a career as a builder in his early 20's, Ross retired and returned to Waikaka with his wife Steph to take up lifestyle farming!  He has now been running the farm alongside Laurie for the past 8 years, and is often found with kids Ollie and Emmie along for the ride.  Keeping the family tradition alive!
Steph Paterson

Steph Paterson

Steph had always declared that she would be the wife of a farmer but never a farmers wife ... now knee deep in small children, chickens and orphan lambs she has to admit she has grown to love farm life here on Waikaka Station. Training to take on the AI breeding programme for the Hereford stud, Steph has found herself a long way from fashion school where she first met Ross.  Still keeping her creative side satisfied, Steph has recently launched a mobile caravan bar business catering for weddings and events.
